Essential Ent and Ophthalmic Equipment

Primary diagnostic equipment is an important part of nearly every medical setting – clinics, diagnostic centers, hospitals, urgent care and more. Depending on the specialization of the healthcare center there will be the requirement for the essential ear, nose, throat, or eye equipment, as well as others.

No matter what you have planned for as a specialty, after the completion of your primary medical training, you will need to have competency using these professional diagnostic tools. Acquiring in-depth knowledge and mastery of these tools during your training is crucial. Each trainee going through medical diagnostic training needs to have their own set of instruments so they can practice in both the clinical setting as well as at home to develop the required proficiencies
The following instruments are core to any general physical exam used in a wide variety of specialties.

Otoscope
This medical device is used to examine the ear, and in particular the ear canal and tympanic membrane, this is known as Otoscopy. The clinician needs to hold the Otoscope by its power supply (handle) with one hand, while gripping the pinna (top  of the outer ear) and lifting to help open the ear canal.  The disposable tip placed on the distal end of the Otoscope is then inserted into the ear canal to illuminate the canal and Tympanic membrane while the practitioner overserves it through the magnifying lens on the Otoscope.  The instrument also allows for the use of an insufflation bulb that provides the practitioner with the ability to change air pressure in the ear to observe the motion of the Tympanic membrane.  This aids in the diagnosis of fluid behind the membrane.
Ophthalmoscope
This device is used to examine the eye, direct ophthalmoscopy. The Ophthalmoscope is a standard tool that allows the practitioner to illuminate the back of the eye (fundus) through the pupil, while using a separate viewing path through the pupil to observe veins, nerves, and arteries in their natural state.  Creating a separate path through the pupil is important to reduce or eliminate reflections off the Corneal surface which would obstruct the user’s view.
